SSDH – Dưới đây là 10 cặp từ gây nhầm lẫn trong tiếng Anh, có cả ví dụ phân biệt và dịch nghĩa. Các bạn có biết những cặp từ dễ nhầm lẫn nào thì chia sẻ lại để mọi người cùng biết nha. Chúc các bạn học tốt.
1. conscientious / conscious
– conscientious (adj): có tâm/ tâm huyết
Conscientious workers should be rewarded for their hard work.
-conscious (adj) of sth = tobe aware of sth (nhận ra)
Most people are conscious of the need to protect the environment.
-conscious còn có nghĩa là awake
He’s still conscious but he’s very badly injured.
2. considerable / considerate (adj)
-considerable = significant (nhiều, đáng kể)
-considerate: ân cần, chu đáo
3. continual / continuous
Về cơ bản dùng giống nhau, nhưng continual diễn ra liên tục nhưng có thể đứt quãng. Còn continuous thì liền mạch hơn.
Eg:
– The computer system has given us continual problems ever since we installed it. Some days it
works, other days it doesn’t. (có ngày hoạt động có ngày ko -> có đứt quãng
– The continuous noise from the new motorway has forced many people to move. (liên tục ồn không dứt)
4. job / work
– Job: chỉ một vị trí, nghề nghiệp cụ thể
– Work: chỉ hoạt động mà bạn làm (nói chung)
eg.
– Everybody has the right to a decent JOB with good pay.
– During the economic recession, a lot of people found themselves out of WORK.
5. percent / percentage
– Percent viết tắt là %, dùng sau một con số vd 70%
– Percentage là tỷ lệ phần trăm. Vd: A high percentage of their customers order their goods online.
6. practice / practise; Advice/advise
Đuôi “ce” là Noun còn “se” là Verb
7. principle/ principal
– principle (noun)nguyên tắc, nguyên lý
– principal (noun) hiệu trưởng, (adj) chính, quan trọng = main
eg.
Iraq’s principal export is oil. (xuất khẩu chính là dầu)
She was appointed University principal in 2009.
The country is run on socialist principles. (đất nước vận hành theo nguyên tắc XH chủ nghĩa)
8. raise / rise
– Đều có nghĩa là tăng, nhưng raise là ngoại động từ nên cần một tân ngữ theo sau, còn rise là nội động từ, không cần tân ngữ.
Eg: The restaurant RAISES its prices.
The restaurant’s prices rise sharply.
9. respectable / respectful
We are usually respectful to (show our respect to) people who are respectable (worthy of respect).
– Respecful: (adj) thể hiện sự tôn trọng
– Respectable (adj) đáng được tôn trọng/ đáng kính
10. Affect vs Effect
Affect là động từ, effect thường dùng với dạng là danh từ
Eg.
– Diverting the course of the river will have a major effect on the local ecosystem.
– Frequent traffic jams in the suburbs seriously affect journey times into the city.
