SSDH – Trong mỗi kỳ tuyển sinh đại học Mỹ có hàng ngàn học sinh của Mỹ và nhiều quốc gia khác trên thế giới nộp đơn dự tuyển. Hệ thống tuyển sinh của đại học Mỹ khá là bài bản với bộ hồ sơ yêu cầu rất cụ thể và khắt khe. Các bạn hãy nghiên cứu thông tin cụ thể về các bài luận săn học bổng dưới đây nhé.
Bên cạnh 3 điều kiện cần là điểm trung bình học tập (Academic GPA) trong 3 năm học trung học phổ thông (10, 11, và 12), điểm các kỳ khảo thí trình độ tiếng Anh tiêu chuẩn quốc tế như IELTS/TOEFL iBT cũng như SAT/ACT, và các hoạt động ngoại khóa, thì ban tuyển sinh các trường đại học Mỹ còn yêu cầu thí sinh hoàn thành các bài luận trong hồ sơ. Các bài luận này chính là nơi để con người trong bạn lên tiếng, và cũng chính là yếu tố quyết định việc bạn được nhập học hay không và là yếu tố “sống còn” giúp giành được học bổng. Các bài luận chính là phần “hồn” của một hồ sơ xin vào đại học Mỹ, rất nhiều trường đánh giá cao các bài luận này, nhiều khi còn trên cả điểm số. Có thể thành tích học tập của các bạn không quá xuất sắc, nhưng các bạn vẫn có khả năng trở thành người chiến thắng trong cuộc săn học bổng nếu thuyết phục được ban tuyển sinh bằng các bài luận cực kỳ ấn tượng. Hồ sơ thông thường yêu cầu 3 dạng bài luận sau:
I. Bài luận chính (Common App Personal Essay)
Bài luận chính phải nói về con người bạn, chính vì vậy nên tên bài luận là Personal Essay nghĩa là bài luận cá nhân. Bài luận là tiếng nói của chính bạn, là cơ hội để bạn thể hiện những mặt khác của bản thân mà bảng điểm và các hoạt động ngoại khóa chưa mở ra trước mắt ban tuyển sinh. Các trường đại học Mỹ có thể yêu cầu nộp bài luận chính hoặc không yêu cầu. Dưới đây là yêu cầu và 7 đề tài cho bài luận chính trong Common App cho mùa tuyển sinh 2020-2021:
“The essay demonstrates your ability to write clearly and concisely on a selected topic and helps you distinguish yourself in your own voice. What do you want the readers of your application to know about you apart from courses, grades, and test scores? Choose the option that best helps you answer that question and write an essay of no more than 650 words, using the prompt to inspire and structure your response. Remember: 650 words is your limit, not your goal. Use the full range if you need it, but don’t feel obligated to do so. (The application won’t accept a response shorter than 250 words.). The 2020-2021 Common Application Essay Prompts are as follows:
- Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
- The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
- Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
- Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma – anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
- Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
- Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
- Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.”
Đây là 650 từ quan trọng nhất mà các bạn từng viết từ trước tới nay. Các dạng đề bài này yêu cầu bạn phải trình bày thông tin nền và cá tính riêng, ý tưởng và niềm tin, thất bại và thành công, khát vọng và việc chuyển tiếp từ trẻ con sang người lớn. Lưu ý các đề bài có thể thay đổi theo từng năm, các bạn có thể cập nhật trong website của Common App theo link:https://www.commonapp.org/apply/essay-prompts. Thông tin bổ sung (Additional Information).
Bên cạnh bài luận chính thì trong hồ sơ có thêm phần thông tin bổ sung (Additional Information), đây chính là nơi mà các bạn có thể cung cấp thông tin bổ sung hay chia sẻ thêm các thông tin hay chi tiết về bản thân mà bạn chưa có cơ hội thể hiện trong bài luận chính. Phần này không bắt buộc và cho phép học sinh bổ sung thêm thông tin phù hợp vào hồ sơ trong quá trình đánh giá của ban tuyển sinh.

II. Các bài luận phụ (College-Specific Questions)
Ngoài bài luận chính, nhiều trường đại học ở Mỹ yêu cầu học sinh viết thêm vài bài luận phụ. Những bài luận phụ này bao gồm các câu hỏi yêu cầu trả lời ngắn gọn hoặc nhiều chủ đề khác nhau, và khác với bài luận chính nơi mà bạn có thể tự lựa chọn chủ đề, những chủ đề cho bài luận phụ sẽ do các trường quyết định. Required Short Answers & Essay Prompts
- Describe three experiences and/or activities that have helped develop your passion for a possible career in a STEM field. Use the separate spaces provided below, one for each STEM experience and/or activity.
STEM experience/activity 1 and explanation (Your response should range between 10-120 words.)
STEM experience/activity 2 and explanation (Your response should range between 10-120 words.)
STEM experience/activity 3 and explanation (Your response should range between 10-120 words.) - Much like the life of a professional scientist or engineer, the life of a “Techer” relies heavily on collaboration. III. Bài luận bổ sung (Writing Supplements)
Một số trường đại học Mỹ yêu cầu nộp các bài luận bổ sung dựa vào câu trả lời của các câu hỏi trước đó. Ví dụ trường Brown University yêu cầu nộp 3 bài luận bổ sung:
- Brown’s Open Curriculum allows students to explore broadly while also diving deeply into their academic pursuits. Tell us about an academic interest (or interests) that excites you, and how you might use the Open Curriculum to pursue it. (250 words)
- At Brown, you will learn as much from your peers outside the classroom as in academic spaces. How will you contribute to the Brown community? (250 words)
- Tell us about a place or community you call home. How has it shaped your perspective? (250 words)
